    Aftermath quiche

Does anybody remember Dame Edna's recipe for aftermath quiche? When the guests have left the party, you collect all the leftovers from the plates, avoiding fag ash if possible, pop them into a pastry shell, add beaten eggs and bake for twenty five minutes. Very sustaining.

How are your Christmas leftovers? We've just finished the last scraps of pudding, and there are a few mince pies. The cake will last for weeks yet, this year's was a great success although the icing was rather soft ( Too much glycerin )

I was banned from booze as I was taking antibiotics for a dental abscess which kindly blew up on the Saturday before. Christmas lunch with pineapple juice was OK, but not to be repeated. The New Year holds promise of freedom though.

    Real men don't eat quiche!!

No leftovers here, main event was beautiful organic welsh lamb, secondary event was gammon which had been matured in honey and roasted with marmalade and cloves. Only major leftovers are the Christmas Cake, which I am making a Herculean effort to finish off although it's rather too sweet but, with all the fruit in it, I count as one of my five portions a day! Twice a day!

      Never heard that one before!

A box of donated mince pies and the remains of a home-made Christmas cake are about it.

Re: "the bird"... what we have always done is cut all remains up into very small pieces - turkey meat, stuffing, brussels sprouts - and bind them into a chunky 'paste' using apple sauce and bread sauce. Seasoned healthily (plenty of black pepper) it makes the most delicious sandwich filling, which I always associate with Boxing Day and the ensuing week. Finished this year's mix yesterday afternoon!

The turkey (half-turkey, to be more exact) went into the freezer rather than the oven as my partner & I were/are suffering from heavy colds & neither of us felt like cooking & eating a major meal - I'm not sure if that counts as 'left-over' or not. We had fried left-over potatoes & egg. The turkey will be cooked for Hogmanay (probably).

I've never heard of Cali's suggestion for a mash up in a sandwich! That sounds rather gloopy to me. I've always loved the leftover tatties, sprouts, etc., just fried up like bubble and squeak. Mother always fried up the left over Christmas pud in butter .... or crumbled and heated it and poured over vanilla ice cream ... which is truly yummtious!

            How very dare you!!

I'm sure it could be, but if done with finesse and not too much apple sauce and bread sauce (just to bind, Anna, and add a little spicy / sharp flavour - not to render ... ahem... GLOOPY ) it is delicious and healthy!! No frying involved!!

If we have new year left overs, I shall try Caliban's sandwich solution (!!) at the Arsenal game on New Years Day. Seeing the Arse game yesterday I may need some sustenance ......

After watching one of those nauseating American food programmes on TV
I am about to attempt to "Waffelize" the remaining bread sauce .........

I have no leftovers as I've been poorly for a fortnight - one of those nasty fluey bugs where you cough day and night and feel terribly debilitated after the worst is over. I haven't felt like eating at all so Christmas dinner has been postponed until my birthday in February. This will coincide with my retirement so I shall enjoy my dinner even more.

Hope you are feeling better , HB. There are some absolute shockers around this year.
                    I blame the government.
Your February bash should be one to remember though !!

Hello Hautboiste! My brother in law had the same thing - apparently he's now been ill for 10 days, over the worst but still a strange shade of grey. He's cancelled Christmas, though my sister came and celebrated with us for a day... and he can't implement your solution, because his birthday's on Boxing Day! We've been taking Vitamin-C-and-zinc like billy-oh, so far so good, no one else has got it!

Wish you a rapid and complete recovery and an easy ride to freedom and celebration in February!

Burn's Night, Caliban - that could be the place to go for a late birthday celebration - and it's a Friday next year, so perfect celebration time! Good health to all for 2013.

Sounds like a plan, Hautboiste - very sorry to hear of your sickos - sounds like a case for chilled V8 juice and Lea & Perrins with a growing titration of vodka as you feel your strength improve

A case of kill or cure, perhaps?!

We still have half the Christmas cake, but that will last happily as it was well doped with booze. There are a few mince pies as well and a bit of brandy butter. Tonight's New Year Feast is duck with baked vegetables and a mustery dessert which I'm not allowed to see.
