There is a strange foreign body in frenchie's cup of coffee which is troubling me greatly ....... a crescent moon as though she had decided to turn it into an Irish coffee but suddenly changed her mind

There is, isn't there? I thought it might be a reflection, but on reflection I don't think it is.
My aunt used to have a remarkable coffee making device on display on her sideboard. It had a spirit lamp under a large silver flask which was sealed tightly with a cork with a metal tube through it. It made coffee on a vacuum principle. Unfortunately I never saw it in use.

I don't know what you mean
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
I do mostly use a cafetiere - occasionally also a little Italian stove-top espresso machine - and was told some years ago by a friend that it improves the result (in the former) to just soak the ground coffee with hot water and allow it to stand for a minute or two before filling the cafetiere. I've never conducted an experiment on whether this improves the flavour but I suspect that it improves the dispersal of the coffee through the water while the coffee steeps before the plunger is lowered.

If you rotate the cafetiere so that the water swirls around as you lower the plunger, the grains will move apart more easily.
That image has been Tampered With! Very well too, if I may say so.
What can you mean, Mr Mangerton?

I meant that, like Anna, I too had seen a sfb in your coffee cup, but when I looked again later it was no longer there. I came to the conclusion that you had altered the image.
But I could very well be wrong. It would not be the first time, as my friends and family will bear witness.

I'd had a sip since then.
I've forwarded a pic of the gadget to be sent to friends in Paris. I hope they'll remember when these were in common use.
sfb - science fiction ......?

I am currently undergoing withdrawal symptoms because my beloved Nespresso machine has gone on the blink. I'm afraid no other coffee really cuts the mustard anymore. Lovely Espresso, Cappucinos, Lattes- all at the touch of a button. Hopefully I will get it going again- otherwise I will just have to buy a replacement!!
