This is all Philippine-grown coffee (Mrs Pab calls it 'native coffee'). I don't know if it's available commercially in our Western sense, but I'll do a little research and let you know. I can see that I'll have to return to the UK armed with coffee.

I thought you found it in the UK somewhere. Please don't go to any trouble! I can have a dig around...

I'm with you there RT. Milk is an adulteration in coffee; likewise for tea (which should be brewed in a pot with loose tea incidentally, but that's another thread. )

No - I live here most of the time, and in the UK now and again. I promise I won't make a special trip.

I’m with you there, Richard, about the milk. The trouble with Americano as served in places like Costa Coffee and motorway service stations is that it always comes in a huge mug, even if you ask for the smallest size, and other gents of a certain age will probably agree that a full bladder is a no-no when on the move. I’ve found the best way to get a decent cup of white coffee is to ask for a double espresso and add just the right amount of milk. It’s usually cheaper as well.

As for drinking at home, we like CaféDirect Machu Picchu Fairtrade Organic (makes us feel virtuous, too).

Does anyone remember Carwardine’s in London? They had a shop at the bottom of Southampton Row near Holborn in the 70s and used to roast the coffee on site – there was an absolutely heavenly aroma coming out of the extractor. I sometimes just used to stand outside on the pavement for a few minutes and breathe it in, on my way to Skoob’s bookshop in Sicilian Arcade. The Carwardine one I liked was Kenya Peaberry. Used to grind the beans up in a little Moulinex grinder – hair-raisingly dangerous and probably banned now.

I was persuaded to give up my morning coffee and now have tea. If I have to have coffee in the morning then it's a flat white, otherwise not being used to it I get wired but it's back to a coffee mid-morning, tea in the afternoon and an black after dinner. As I drink so little of it at the moment I just use a cafetière and Lavazza Crema & Gusto is what I use at present. I have noticed that owners of swanky expensive coffee machines are exclusively male, as Ammy says - boys'n'toys!
Sir Velo mentioned tea - lately I've been going to a specialist loose tea shop, it's been quite a revelation and education after a diet of mainly Tetley or PG Tips ...
