Never had that happen (and never considered it as a possibility). I suppose that not washing the grounds from the metal mesh after each use would result in the mesh being clogged up and increase the pressure needed to depress the plunger, but all coffee lovers would do that anyway.

Do I need to chastise the dishwasher?

I have seen this happen a few times, and not just with me either. I've not actually seen a cafetière burst, but I have seen and also felt situations where the backwards force on the plunger was high, and rotating the jug solved the problem quickly. It could be a function of the size of the grounds used, the size of the mesh in the plunger, and other attributes of the cafetière.

A Great Cup of Coffee - A New Yorker video-cum-article.

Worth reading to see the following comment by 'mentalitydesign' in context:

        "bull doodle.

take good coffee from a respectable maker (like Lavazza or illy, not some panda-poo-free-trade-guatemalan-cannibal-co-op), make yourself an espresso, smoke a cigarillo, get on with your life.

these twee coffee alchemists are making me nauseous."

I think there's room for both, surely

I have recently enjoyed reading Claudia Roden 's book on Coffee - the legendary cookery writer has some good ideas for making your own blends and I have really enjoyed a mixture of Costa Rica and Ethopian Mocha half and half from our local coffee sellers .

                Anyone else do this ?

Hope you ain't been taken in. My old schoolmate Delroy passes himself off as an Ethiopian and fries up birds mellow and Nescafé fine blend and sells it off to as many chinless middle class wonders that happen upon his stall.

(Del, in the most unlikely event that you read this post, sorry mate, but rest assured they'll keep coming)

Your mate Delroy says your footer is in Turkish, nothing to do with Ethiopian coffee, the making of which he learned from his Italian mate Giuseppe in Walworth

Just boiling up some Turkish coffee (ground from fresh beans). It's rather strong and I will add hot milk (which is really philistine).

Turks drink it espresso style, and if you have sugar, that's added to taste while the ground coffee is being boiled.

                        Glorious smell.

It seems judging by how far this has gone off topic that the answer to my question is no !
