    Serving and saving salad

    The supermarkets seem to do something with their salads in the bag (nitrogen filled?) as they seem to go off within hours of opening.

    Here is a tip that my wife picked up and it seems to work.

    Get a few of those clip'n'click airtight containers. Get smallish ones. Put a sheet of kitchen towel inside each box then some salad on top. Seal. Put in fridge.

      I find the smoked seal blubber will taint the salad

        Endive in the garden, Lambs lettuce in the greenhouse, and chicory in the cellar. My 8” salad bowl is never out of use throughout the year.

          Washing it before putting it in sealed container in fridge seems to help, though the sample size on my database is fairly small.

                  It is but the rest is hot, like roast beef and Yorkshire puddings, and sprouts (I know. Foreigners do funny things )

                    And in any case, not all food has to be hot in winter.

                    Though my Sunday best today will be sausage casserole rather than roast beef and Yorkshire
                    It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

                      I like the tubs of growing salad (99p from supermarkets) as very often I won't finish a big bag of salad but I will try putting it in a container. Bagged salad is much more interesting than Iceberg, if I buy whole lettuce I generally have Little Gem (why can't I buy endive easily now?) In the Summer I grow my own mixed leaves in containers on the kitchen windowsill which is very easy to do. Never tried salad with a roast dinner, I usually have it with fish or pasta dishes in the Winter.

                        I went on a trip in a small ship to Antarctica, and they had salad available every day for three weeks, I never found out how they did it.

                            ... tesco's Romaine Lettuce Hearts still seem to be acceptably crunchy even in December. Provenance, however, is Spain - which will be unacceptable to some of our more earnest boardees...

                              I have kept repotted salad plants like this for months and you can just pick a few leaves at a time.
