it's assumed that there are things we "all know"
in my experience (which is mostly related to music so obviously I use that as a primary filter for everything ) this is rarely the case .......

on the whole I think (even though I do seem to scrape my exhaust getting on the ferry from Calais on an annual basis) that this is probably a good idea , and look forward to it starting in the House of Commons bars

There is a serious problem with alcohol abuse; either governments do nothing, or they take measures to control it. Minimum pricing is one of those measures. So many of the posts on this thread seem to deny that there is a problem, or minimise/trivialise it by saying, in effect, 'I drink more than I should but it doesn't do me any harm.'
I said nothing about my own drinking habits, and I didn't minimise/trivialise the problem or deny that there was a serious problem. And my comment on pensioners added to the argument by pointing out that they are on the whole less likely to indulge in 'harmful' drinking if 'harmful' means 'causing harm to others' by, e.g. public brawling under the influence. You really should read people's posts more carefully before accusing them of 'sheer stupidity'. Hurling insults certainly 'adds nothing to the argument', which is what you say you want. I might think privately that many of your views are, shall we say, less than wise, but restrain myself from using insulting language to say so in a public forum. I think you should too.
