    A marriage made in heaven

    What are your favourite food pairings? Some combinations seem to be elevated beyond all expectation by their happy partnership. All comers i.e. food + food, food + drink, drink + drink; whatev.

    A couple of thoughts for starters - red wine and bay leaves; cheese sandwich and beer.

      I'd never tried the classic oysters & Guiness, until the nice barlady at the Inn in Applecross gave me a quarter pint on the house with my oysters once (I had to pay for the oysters . It really worked - & now I'd drink nothing else with them.

        or a local sourced ham roll [wholemeal] with the local beer at The Hole In The Wall in Liverpool [what was that beer? it was gravity feed from the first floor] about 32 or 33 years ago

        sorry about the need for a time machine but i am sure the recipes can be readily recreated

              BTW, there was a wine bar in Amsterdam where I ate circa 1970. They served only wine and cheese.

              It was called Le Bon Mariage.

              (They played classical music, too, and I always remember the place when I hear the Mozart K488 Piano Concerto, which was playing that evening. Bon Mariage indeed.)

                now that looks interesting.

                A classic: pork and apple. Or ham (bacon) and egg. Certain apples with certain cheeses. (My last form master at school was a French teacher and he had posters of these around the room. That was 40 years ago and I never was able to try those combinations. ) Continuing the pig theme - pork and sage.

                  Ham, eggs and chips as served at The Roebuck, Alcester. (Three in a marriage? It's not unknown)

                  And at home, tomato and marmite sandwiches.

                    Kev - my Dad, who grew up in Lincolnshire, said his family would eat cheese with fruit cake.

                        Isn't there a dish called Heaven & Earth, i.e. potatoes and apples, just boiled and cooked together, but not sure.
