Waitrose sell Arbroath Smokies but whether they're kosher or generic ones I don't know. I'll have to ask. I used to be sent Craster kippers sometimes by a friend and I had a very nice smoked haddock chowder last week.

"Arbroath Smokies" is an EU protected name, so I'm sure they'll be genuine. As far as kosher's concerned, I'm not too sure.

      How was the haggis?

I've been out this morning and I've got lots to do today so consequently the haggis brunch will be tomorrow (it's more of a lazy Sunday morning type of thing I think) but I'm sure it'll be delicious. I'm partial to haggis occasionally, I wonder if anyone has tried Mcsween's vegetarian one? (Although it rather defeats the purpose, rather like vegetarian bacon!)

I didn't realise Arbroath Smokies were protected, that's good to know.

indeed (as with Yorkshire forced rhubarb etc etc) without the EU protection these would have died out
sadly they have not been convinced about Lincolnshire sausages

Find out about the UK geographical indication (GI) schemes that protect the geographical names of food, drink and agricultural products, and the UK GI schemes registers.

I have been contemplating the veggie haggis, after having rubbished it as an idea ! Might just try it anyway.
Never yet found a waitrose stocking smokies....might have to order by post.

I noticed on my last visit that they have proper Craster kippers on the fish counter too. Popped in there (Craster, not Waitrose ) last time I drove back from Scotland (some years ago). By the time we were back in London, the car smelt like a trawler

Yummy breakfasts for a couple o'days though but, pet!

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Interesting reading. I'd never heard of a Newmarket Sausage, nor that Cumberlands were protected. So what's the problem with Lincolnshire, does it not have any history with the County or is it just the name describes solely what herbs are used?

I'll check out the Waitrose fish counter next week for Craster kippers and see if they know what producer of Smokies they buy from. I'll also check out the mobile fishman (he's only here on market day), he's the only place that sells laverbread but I haven't noticed if he sells Smokies (I tend to be a bit conservative with fish and buy mainly salmon and trout)
