In this month's Waitrose magazine there is a recipe for apple and mint chutney. Which set me thinking. There will be a surplus of apples and blackberries here, so why not combine them into a chutney? I've now found a couple of recipes online, including an apple, blackberry and chilli chutney and one from River Cottage which is described as a blackberry and apple relish (which sounds rather too sweet tasting)
I've never made chutney/relish before, I only want to make a small quantity initially and I would like one which isn't too sweet, doesn't involve sultanas, and has a definite kick/tang. Not sure if anyone here has experience? I'm thinking of something which will go well with both a strong cheddar and cooked meats such as pork, gammon and duck. Suggestions welcome, also to which choice of vinegar.
