There was a time when I would happily meet folk in pubs in Borough market often en route to other forms of entertainment and indeed across Greater London. Those times have long gone. Notwithstanding that one of my favourite places in the Borough was the victim of terrorism earlier this year and the effing and blinding confrontation of the underclass crosses one's path about three times each day irrespective of who and where one happens to be, the combination of drink and public transport is a potentially lethal one. A key reason why I gave up on in-London-and-then-back-home-to-the-suburbs jaunts was the way of younger professional classes. Lawyers and doctors with looseness on illegal drug taking until they have families, always with one eye on profit making and pushing and shoving when not out of it themselves. Always eager to turn round and say to their fellow "authorities" the other person is in the wrong. I find them more terrorizing than any branch of Islam. I virtually gave up on the stuff altogether for twelve years but then parents have heart attacks and go senile and also the health police get to one. Only these people can have the power of affecting people so badly that they break a life long policy and help decide drink in the home is a good option.
Of course, the prices outside are ridiculous and when one takes oneself off on very long walks alone there is a societal test that accompanies it. I've stopped off quite a few times to refresh and to see if my thought about the communal spirit in public houses being very strong was true as I forced myself to believe when I was a student. The answer after some considerable research since May is that it mainly is not. I was with other people in those days and couldn't see that all else was largely fantasy. I'm pleased that I was blind then and more comprehending in these times. Real ale still has its merits. It is the only enjoyable alcohol in my opinion. All other alcohol is rubbish. It is geographically interesting and where it is accentuated people sit there with pints and do crossword puzzles. The occasional dog or cat wanders around and while it isn't exactly the bestest of mates forever it leans more towards the socially safe environment. In Lowestoft, I was taken back decades to a time when one could have one here and one there with someone else and with a long walk between each place. Genuinely be interested in things like inner decor along with wider discussion before walking back to bed. The bliss of it - that sense if not of neighbourliness then neighbourhood.
(He was at Brentford today as is to be expected - 0-0 - is it my imagination but are more matches going into more than 9 minutes of extra time? - yet another form of ludicrous!)
