A week ago on Bowden Hill overlooking Lacock of Abbey fame, a pint of Moles Best Bitter, a new Wiltshire beer to rival Wadworths 6X from Moles Brewery of Melksham. Smooth, slightly hoppy, slightly malty, even my good lady took a second swig.

I remember going to the The Rising Sun, Bowden Hill, over 30 years ago when it was literally a "public house". Run by a couple of old chaps, the bar was a living room with a barrel of beer in it.

Just got back from the Red Lion, Cricklade, with an excellent range of ales - about 10 - with four brewed on the premises.

With my tastebuds effectively numbed by the Hoppenhammer, the only thing I'll be able to taste is a couple of BrewDog Punk IPAs for the 3rd Act of Siegfried.

A heavy and severe hop content with a refreshing and distinctly grapefruity finish. Mindblowing.

The beer that is, not Act 3 of Siegfried. Though on second thoughts...

New Zealand hops, so no points for responsible air mileage.

Yes, ams. It comes in 33 cl bottles either singly or in a 4-pack. I would not recommend an entire 4-pack at a sitting. I would describe the initial taste as an assault. Currently available in a couple of the better (i.e. non-generic) off licences here in Belfast. PM me if you would like further details.

BrewDog does a range of fine light and dark beers, the former taking their cue from the hoppy American Pale Ale tradition. Trashy Blonde, Dead Pony Club, 5am Saint are other offerings.

Happened to catch the Portillo railway programme this evening, and very good to see him visit the wonderful Hook Norton brewery, with its original steam engine etc...



Producer of one of the great ales, Old Hooky, and adjacent to the 'brewery pub', the Pear Tree... in which thanks to a local University friend, I have been agreeably partridged on a number of occasions
