While visiting the parents, tried a Maine brew that I've never had before, Bar Harbor Summer Ale from Atlantic Brewing Company, Bar Harbor, Maine (natch). Good stuff, although I don't claim to be a beer connossieur at all.

Beer? I've never understood why anyone likes such a revolting concoction, but in the real world, I appear to in a minority.

Not at all, I have yet to meet anyone who believes a word that Gove says

There are quite a few seasonal Christmas beers around at the moment, some of them insanely strong and/or with silly seasonal names.

A couple of good ones I've had over the festivities have been William Brothers' Yule Smile, and Stewart Brewing's Three Wise Men.

They're both very enjoyable, fairly straightforward, dark ales in the 4.5 - 5% ABV range. The names are certainly seasonal, but I'll leave it up to you to decide about their silliness.

I had a modicum of the Inveralmond Brewery's "Santa's Swallie" when out with some work colleagues two weeks ago. It was quite palatable, but the name caused some consternation.

"You don't expect me to go the bar and ask for that!!!"

              "Oh yes I do!"

It could have been worse, though...

Whilst Crimbling in East Yorks I was inveigled into a 5-pint afternoon session with The Ugly Sisters by Marstons ... and jolly nice it was too, tho with three sisters present in the party, constant denials & reassurances were the order of the day

Reminds me of the joke. Those of a delicate nature (in the unlikely event of there being any here), look away now.

This guy, Angus, is a shepherd. And he's showing all the tourists around the village. He points to a row of houses and says, "See all these houses? I built all of them. Do they call me Angus the House Builder? No, they don't!" They walk on and see some fences around the fields. "Yes, I built all these fences. But do they call me Angus the Fence Builder? No, they don't!" Then they walk on further and he says, "In fact I built most of the roads in the middle of the village. But do they call me Angus the Road Builder? No, they don't." Then he pauses, and says, "But I shag ONE sheep...."

Bluestateprommer, If you ever venture further south than Maine, there are some good beers available her in Newport, RI. Our favorite place is called Malt, on Broadway. They serve a wide range of American, Belgian, English beers as well as many good whiskies.

I know a slightly fruitier version which concerns a Spaniard called Pedro and a punchline involving a pig and a four letter word.

                              And a Grouse chaser!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
