... yes, I think 250ml wd be too small. 330ml is nice - it's still too small, but two gives 660ml which seems just right... (500ml wdn't quite cut it... )

If I'm on my own, a half bott of wine suffices. If it's two of us, one bott is not enough for two. If it's four people, a bottle each seems quite reasonable...

And very good 'The Wine Society' is too, I've been a member for many years. Thoroughly recommended, for a fairly modest joining fee you get a lifetime lifeline to experts, whose main aim in life is to bring you good wine at the best possible price.

Some of their drink is excellent. They have some really good sherry which is good to have in at Christmas. This is likely to be much, much, better than anything you've had before, unless you've met someone who already belongs to the WS. Madeira and brandy, as suggested, are likely to be good, though don't try to be too cheap. Unlike other outlets there really is likely to be a difference between the cheap bottom end, and bottles which cost somewhat more.

You don't have to buy every week, or even every month. We usually have one or two assorted boxes around Christmas - sherry, port, dessert wines etc., and send bottles out to some whom we think might enjoy them.

The Wine Society is excellent for Christmas presents, it solves at a stroke that perennial problem about what to give people (no one in my circle of friends and relative is teetotal). It does a Christmas gift catalogue, items range from a single bottle to festive dozens. If you send them the addresses they will even deliver for you.

Concerning prices, they wisely stay away from the cheapest stuff, because they cant really compete with the supermarkets down there. Nothing under a fiver, but a lot in the five to ten pound range. Top prices are very high and way out my range until ERNIE comes up with goods. I live in hope ...
