Available in all the best supermarkets, Dave - but if you're around Dundee a trip to the Speedwell Bar in the Perth Road never disappoints, in my experience.

Yes, I would strongly second that. The Speedwell (aka Mennies) is well worth a visit. In fact, for a good evening's entertainment start at Mennies, and walk eastwards along Perth Road towards the city centre. There are many excellent pubs along the way, and you'll pass the Art College and the University. Do not miss the Phoenix, another favourite watering hole of mine. It has an excellent range of cask ales, and their chilli is first class too.

Both Mennies and the Phoenix have Deuchars IPA, as do some of the other pubs you pass en route.

I've only just spotted this thread. Nice to see my local brewery given such prominence so early on. Ten minutes' walk from here - though that means passing three pubs first.

Indeed, Ferney!! All those beers are good!It's because u-p there, asalways, it's the water that makes the beer! They have rather soft water there.

There used to be a Mitchell's Brewery in Lancaster until sometime in the late 90s, when it was bought over by Thwaites. I remember their standard, fairly pale coloured, bitter being pretty good, although I can't remember if it was called "Mitchell's Bitter" or "Lancaster Bitter". It was a good functional down-to-earth name like that anyway.

Thwaites currently make a beer called Lancaster Bomber which is also good, although it's not (no longer?) brewed in Lancaster.

Maybe it's one of these ones you're thinking of?

Ah, yes; I lived in London and Sussex for over twelve years and could never get used to the scummy (literally - a film appearing on the surface of your tea) hard water. As for the number of kettles I got through (even with a "fur ball") ...

No; Thwaites operate from their brewery in Blackburn, very close to the town where I was born (Pennine water since I was a nipper !) - I remember from a small child, seeing the enormous dray horses pulling the barrels to local pubs and my father pointing them out saying "One day, lad, all that'll be yourn!"

Yay we had a Cortina too Biggest boot ever, but even then my dad had to put a roof rack on for the 2 weeks at Auntie Olwen's cos my mother always took a shedload of food too. Dad's sotto voce 'they do have shops in Porthmadog, y'know' was greeted with a martyr's sigh

And on the subject of lesser known but excellent German beers, if you're ever in the Stuttgart area it's well worth tracking down

• Baisinger Export (a South German style lager - less hoppy than the northern ones)
• Schönbuch Hefeweizen hell

They're both brewed in small towns near Stuttgart, but you sometimes see them in the city itself. The beers from the main beweries in the city are decent but not in the same class.

There's another Cornish beer, which i wholeheartedly reccomend and that is calledRock Brweery. They do a rahter good a;le caledd Doombar!!

Lastly, I've been sampling some Deuchars IPA.

Of these three, I prefer the EB ale from St Andrews.

I've still got to look out for the Bitter & Twisted - but I didn't see any on my recent trip. After all that, I still ended up bringing back several bottles of Badger ales, which definitely don't come from Scotland. A year or so back I was somewhat partial to Golden Champion - http://www.hall-woodhouse.co.uk/beers/badgerales/ though now Golden Glory seems to be more common.
