Oh, sorry - it's a beer thread, of course! - somewhere that I have no business to be - so I'd better make a cool, sharp exit...

The other day I saw a bottle of Marston's 'Owd Roger' beer in the supermarket. I'd never heard of it. It is 7.4%.

          Anyone had it?

          Is it any good/recommendable?

I think I had it years ago. It is, as you note, strong, but I recall it was OK. This site gives it 77 - http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/marstons-owd-rodger/11211/ ABV wise it's up there with Leffe - http://www.leffe.com/en

              Thanks Dave2002

I have had Leffe quite a few times in bars, but never realised that it had a high ABV.

Decades ago I was living in SE London and was able to buy Owd Roger by the 2 pint polypin and it fast became my Sunday afternnon beer of choice, delightful with some prawns from the stall outside the New Tiger's Head at Lee and acts from Solti's Ring. It's dark and sweet and very alcofrolic

Years ago in Sweden a group of us used to go out periodically and have pizza (with the obligatory coleslaw) and we tried various brews including Leffe. We generally found that 2 were sufficient, but if we had 3 then getting home (walking) was slightly wobbly. I can't remember ever having more - would have been hazardous - though perhaps my memory might have been dampened. There were several Leffe varieties plus a few others, with strengths between 7% to 9%.

With all that scoff, surely you could've pushed it to 3 Leffes?

Sometimes we did, and that's how we know how wobbles are induced. The restaurant guy actually managed to produce a beer which was even more alcoholic - I think we only tried that once.

I drank my remaining (only) bottle of Abbaye de Vaucelles beer a few days ago - http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1682/30669/

I bought it at the Abbaye itself a few years ago - http://www.abbayedevaucelles.com/index.php
At 7.5 % ABV one bottle was enough, but I did enjoy it, which it seems is more than some others have done. I'd quite like to revisit that part of France.

I'm more of a wine drinker but I do occassionally drink beer. My favorites are IPAs. The trend in the States now is toward micro brews and it isn't unusual for a restaurant to offer more than 100 different varieties of micbrobrews.
Last year I vacationed in Central Europe. I had expected that in Prague and Austria pubs and restaurants would do the same, only more so. After all, the average beer consumption in the Czech Republic is more than 9 times per capita that of the States, and I'm sure that the Austrians are no slouches in that department either. I was therefore quite shocked that at least in the restaurants that we frequented, they would offer two types of beers at most.
