Yes a silver DS was my first ever car. Good spot re: the Maserati connection, but I never liked the look of the SM though - it was a totally different body from the DS (nasty rear end, I always thought). I was never tempted.

I agree re styling, it could have been a wonderful blend of two style-conscious cultures but ended up looking like a dog's breakfast - shame

It had a number of intriguing innovations and also a mighty Maserati engined performance but it failed to grab the public's attention and died an unloved death.

The current Maserati Quattroporte saloon seems ridiculously understated and stylish in comparison

... advice for Amsy when his squillions arrive. There is only one Great Truth that you will need to remember. Never buy a Rolls-Royce unless you are always going to use a chauffeur. If you drive a Rolls, everyone will assume you are a chauffeur. This may not matter if your self-esteem is - as I'm sure it is - watertight : but it can lead to confusion with the staff at restaurants and hôtels, which can be a bore.

Bentleys don't seem to have this problem; gentlemen can drive Bentleys.

The wealthiest of the people I can really call friends* (tho' he introduced me to serious claret drinking, which is nice but stretches the wallet of impoverished gentry such as we... ) - altho' he likes his convertible Jaguars and such-like - normally drives a clapped-out Renault 15 - which he likes for its anonymity...
