I've been enjoying a very nice Chilean (Estevez) Cabernet Sauvignon from ALDI at £4.19. It has a crimson label if you're looking for it. I pefer it to their £3.99 Spanish Merlot .

... got it in one : two of his former students have done exceptionally well in the field of finance, but have always remained close friends with their former history tutor - and so offered a lunch for him and his wife and twenty close friends. Very touching, and very nicely done

Took a punt on a claret in Aldi - not advertised as their 'wine of the week' (Edit: just checked, it is now!), but looked promising for £4.99 (they claimed reduced from 7.99...but subsequent searches reveal it sells from £10 - £17.99!).

Chateau Genlaire, 2021, won a gold at Lyon Concours in 2024. A Bordeaux Supérior from Entre-Deux-Mers it gets solid reviews.

Nice tannic wine, I got 18 today...going back tomorrow - best bargain there since last year's celebrated Cairanne...I managed to get 10 of those, despite it being supposedly limited to two per customer!

I've been drinking a real cheap wine, but I think a really enjoyable one. Guigal CdR Blanc. Amazing value for money -- as if they wanted it to be a good introduction to the Guigal marque, so he made sure that the wines included in the blend were all good, and that the blending was done well.

Funny thing, whilst doing my post above I reminisced about the Guigal Côte Roties that the excellent Mr Jones kept at the Croche-en-bouche in Malvern a few years ago. This really was the most extraordinary wine list for Rhône wines...I still have a print-out of his list, I doubt it could be matched in this country!

Moulin-à-Vent 2009 Clos de Rochegrès, Ch des Jacques, Louis Jadot - last night accompanying Creedy Carver duck breast with cherry. Proof that this excpetional Beaujolais is capable of ageing into pinot noir territory (pinotisation) regarding flavours and texture. Usually I wouldn't wait more than 10 years, but this one at 15 1/2 was still expressive. Great value too, compared with equivalently aged Burgundy.

Talking about Rhône wines earlier on the 'food' thread made me notice a Principauté d'Orange by Le Relais du Roi, Morrisons' 'Wine of the Week'. Just opened it...pretty good....for £5...reduced from £13. I'll be back later in the week - they had lots of it piled high!

These Morrisons 'Wine of the Week' wines are getting quite interesting. This week's is a Bordeaux, Chateau Comte de Saint Emmanuel. 2022. Tried one last night, went back today for 24! At £5, reduced from £12.50, well worth a punt.

I have discovered a new word : this wine has the following description from an admirer -

"A parfaite maturité. Prêt à boire. Degusté sans qu’il apparaisse utile de le décanter. Attaque nette et précise. Prune et cerise noire dominantes. Peu d’arômes empyreumatiques. Une touche de cuir neuf. Tanins parfaitement fondus. Point n’est besoin de trop attendre pour prendre son plaisir. Jolie bouteille."

A most agreeable bottle of Grûner Veltliner - Austrian, obviously. This one was from Waitrose - currently on offer. Good as both an aperitivo (aka ein Glasl) or with food, IMVHO.

That's a great favourite of mine but, like most Waitrose wines, has gone up shockingly in price in recent weeks. I tend to wait until it's on offer and stock up.
