    Ortolan, anyone?

    Most of this hidden behind the paywall, but you get the idea.

    Captured birds are blinded, fattened up, drowned in armagnac and then eaten. The gourmet has a napkin over his head in order to get the full benefit of the aroma.

    30,000 are illegally killed every year in France, in spite of their being an endangered and protected species. And they want permission to take 3,000.

    Well, it's a change to be a 'moderniser' rather than a 'traditionalist' in media-speak.
    It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

      I like the story that it is to hide their faces from God. Is the "drowning in Armagnac" literal? Not sure I want to know the answer.
