    Food and Music pairings

Perhaps we should have a thread devoted to the pairing of Concert selections with cuisine in order to hide any embarrassments, in the same manner that restaurants recommend food and wine pairings.

    Possible Culinary Choices

    Mexican Food-- Revueltas Sensemaya
Bouef Bourguignon-- The Dies Irie movement from Berlioz Requiem
    Borscht-- Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture

And so to add to that initial posting, we have the pairing that triggered Richard's thought:

    Sauerbraten - Shostakovich 'Leningrad' Symphony

    and I would add

Thai extra hot green jungle curry - Koechlin's 'The Jungle Book'

    Cassoulet - Milhaud's 'Carnaval d'Aix'

..... and to follow, ladies and gentlemen....???
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Richard Strauss amusingly did this rather well in the last movement of his Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme Suite - the Dinner - where his various quotes suggest items on the menu.

One Prom season some years ago I tried to have a meal in a London restaurant with food that was the same nationality as the visiting orchestra playing that night at the RAH but soon gave it up on grounds of lack of time. This 2014 season could provide quite a challenge for anyone intending to give this a go.

Webern: Variations for Orchestra + one dry cracker, a carrot and a stick of celery, not forgetting the small glass of water.

Don't know if anyone's going to a concert featuring Satie - but real Satie fans may wish to try out his habitual diet, as described in his book "Memoirs of an Amnesiac" -or they equally might say "Forget it !"

"My only nourishment consists of food that is white: eggs, sugar, shredded bones, the fat of dead animals, veal, salt, coconuts, chicken cooked in white water, moldy fruit, rice, turnips, sausages in camphor, pastry, cheese (white varieties), cotton salad, and certain kinds of fish (without their skin). I boil my wine and drink it cold mixed with the juice of the Fuchsia. I have a good appetite, but never talk when eating for fear of strangling myself."

Evidently, it'll be all white on the night.

Don't think you've quite got the hang of this game, Beefheart!

And I was limbering up for another look at alphabet associations. I'll put it back another year.

                            It's Memorial Day Here

John Phillips Sousa Stars and Stripes Forever paired with Hot Dogs and Baked Beans

Between the piccolo tune and the finale there are many an opportunity to disguise gastric distress.

On a slightly more tasteful note, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance or Arne's Rule Britannia would go down with a plate of fish and chips and a pint of Smith's Chocolate Ale.

Replace the water with a small glass of chilled white wine, and you're there.
