Likewise, for the Bailey to appear to the right of St Paul's.... it's very much looking almost from the east, i.e. parallel with the river as it runs alongside St Paul's...

Gradus, you're a star! Thank you for that. That's the one on Kingsway almost opposite the station, isn't it. I knew I knew it. He said.

The perspective has radically confused the class, rather like that composite image that used to make up the Thames Television logo, with nothing quite where it should be.

You can get an idea of the alignment if you get a map of London, put your thumb on the shard and your little finger on Euston tower which as you can see in the picture almost falls behind the Shard. So, you can see we're looking along a north-west / south-east axis.

Actually, much more simple if I just throw this handy illustration in. My vantage point was The Point, a curious little nub beyond the North East corner of Blackheath, seen here in the bottom right hand corner and the span we observe takes us from outer edge of Bloomsbury on the left across to the rise up to Stamford Hill on the right.

the obscured curved roof I was referring to earlier is just below and to the left of your 8

          great quiz
Mercia, see my perspective map above. As for that horror of a building which folk have thought to been Charing Cross, it actually stands behind the old Telegraph building and its architects had the nerve to mimic it's 'moderne' styling. I've tracked it down on Google Map's 3D view.

Not possible to see it from here, Salymap, as it sits just behind the Shard.

Goldman Sachs actually. It looks just as bad close up.

Do you mean to say that someone actually designed the Shard?

They should then have sat on it!

Where have you found these amazing aerial views of London, SHB? I've been searching for such for a long time, to find my own pad.

Now would ya be meaning your own iPad, surr? Or you own London pad?

I'll take it you mean the former. On my version of iPad the Google Maps has a 3D satellite view and it's great fun because you can actually take your own helicopter tour of London and go right round the shard, St.Paul's and the Gherkin. You should find it in the apps store and I think it's free.

These are just screen grabs hence the boarder.

The red triangle I did myself 'cos I a genius! Ha ha.

Name me a favourite building and I'll come back with a pic. In the meantime, let's get up close and personal with The Shard. No archiect on it, mind!

I did live in London, I doubt if I would recognise it now, it just looks like something transplanted from Dubai, soul less, anonymous. Dreadful. I don't want to go back there.

Going back in time, my London ancestors were all wedded, bedded, and christened at St. Leonards, Shoreditch (which was used by the BBC series Rev) I think that is a lovely Church.

Thanks SHB - I was interested in finding aerial views of my district but don't have an ipad as happens.

There's lots of Olde London still to be found, Anna - I was cycling around Kensington the other week and found still recogniseable buildings that once comprised a farmyard. Lots still to love. It's really only the City, the original district of Southwark where Shakespeare and his buddies used to hang out, and the Isle of Dogs, that have undergone drastic changes.
