    The Photo Booth

    Hello!

I've not actually popped into the Refreshments Room previously, but now that I'm I thought I might suggest that there's a place for a photo booth here.

No, not the passport variety, but just a space where people can share their latest pictures, family memories, school/college shots, or what you will.

I'm a semi-pro photographer myself and I only mention that because I think the Photo Booth should not be like a photo club. What will determine its quality is not the type of camera, the lens or mega-pixies or whatever they say are involved. The point here is the sharing and the comparing of our collective experiences. Firstly though, let me attempt to provide a bit of a crash course in how you can put a picture on here.

    PUTTING A PICTURE ON 'ERE:

Firstly, your picture needs to be online already in a place such as Picasa, Fickr, or Tumblr.

Secondly, you need to know the URL address of that picture. Usually you can get that info by going to where your image is located, hovering over it and then click right press ... With me so far?! All being good your PC will throw up a small menu box and in that you will be able to see 'copy image URL', or such. Right, select that option and then copy/paste the link. Then when you've done that, hurry back here (we'll be waiting!) and paste into a thread as follows ...

Thirdly, that is to say, type the following ... [img] then paste the url you copied and then type [/img].

Basically, it should look like this once you've done that: [img]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jU8RovcCLoIs%20LCY%20EI%20RJZ.jpg[/jpg]

Btw, all this info is explained elsewhere on this site but I know if it were me I wouldn't be in a rush to seek it out.

Anyway, here goes ... I'm going to follow that procedure and all being well you'll see a full-size version of my avatar (and I'm the little fella, since you might ask).

Yes, I think we've cracked it, but just to recap, what you need to remember is a bit of HTML (computer script, that is),. In our case ...

    [img]imageurlintesertedhere.jpg[/jpg]

the image address to put between the square brackets and Bob's your favourite cross-dressing uncle.

Now, are you still with me? Hello?? Hello??!!

But seriously, folks, let's enjoy a festival of pictures, memories and mysteries.

    Come in, the water's lovely!!

Great idea shb. I'll ask frenchie if she's create a separate sub-wotsit.

Re the first stage in your v helpful process, another site - the one I find useful for occasional photo uploads - is "Imgur". Pasted below are some instructions I sent about how to upload pics via that site...

You just have to enter a username, an email address, and then choose a password, click 'accept terms of service'...

Then when you log in to the site, you will see top right of the page your username, and to the left of that, the word 'images'. Click on 'images' and you will be taken to your photo page.

Under the word images, you will see two 'buttons': 'Computer' and 'Web'. If you click on 'Computer' you will be able to select an image that's saved on your computer.

It's easier sometimes to click 'Web'.

You then get a little pop-up screen inviting you to 'Enter the URLs of images, one per line:' (I've only ever done one at a time) ... and a blue box in the centre with an example which will disappear when you paste your url link...

Then you just click the Upload button at the bottom of the pop up box, and the image will be uploaded to your image page.

If you then place your cursor over the image in question on your image page, and click, a rather confusing screen of options pops up. Fear not! You only need to worry about the bottom left option: there is a code starting [URL in a long box under the heading

    Linked BBCode (message boards)

If you press 'control' and then click on the code in the box under that heading, the whole code will be highlighted. Copy that and then go to your post and simply paste: the link then appears in your post.

That code with magically transform itself into the image when you click 'Preview' or when you simply click 'Post quick reply'

    Happy uploading!

I'll join you. This must be November 1963. We've been visited by the mayor (or some such) and the whole class has been instructed not to look at the camera.

Now guess which one is Pabs (madly in love with the girl next to him, who is equally obedient).

Front centre - lad dreamily gazing on hands of belovéd?

Presumably the couple in the centre of the pic are now in jail, staring brazenly straight at the camera in defiance of the law....?

EDIT - ah! well if Tony's right, tell us what prison food's like, pabs! (PS did you ever 'get the girl' ?)

'Tis I in the centre! No, she was not for me (alas!). But I did spend 30 years in prison.

Tony - I was being ironic

There seem to be two cases of cheating going on here. Lad in the front (who's left handed) hasn't a clue and is trying to see what his neighbour (isn't that another lad?) has written - neighbour is wisely covering it up. Further back, another lad has the answers under his desk lid.

And there's the lad in the back row who's simply asking his neighbour.

I alway chose to sit in the next-to-back row, far enough away from the teacher but not too far. Those on the back row tended to get singled out as being bad, and asked more questions.

I hope this is in the spirit of what SHB intended. I've done a lot of work on our family history and uncovered some remarkable stories. My American cousin Lawrence was a mining engineer in Copper Canyon, Mexico, between the wars. Here he is (on horse) having a close encounter with a motor car on a dirt mountain road. I'd love to know what happened next, several possibilities..

I was always a know-it-all (response in unison - "we know"!) and liked the questions.

The Photo Booth has been created. You can either add to this thread, or start a new one.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I'm just getting to see this picture now, as I couldn't at work. There's a lot going on there, and it doesn't half bring back the memories. I can see inkwells on the desk, but pencils seemed to be the order of the day - probably wise with the lady visitor in the good clothes and the hat. It was very fashionable in those days for women to wear a hat indoors. As my father said, in answer to my asking him why, "So that they can talk through them".

As far as seats went, we didn't get to choose at that age. We either sat alphabetically, or by class order. Known troublemakers and cliques were split up, and usually placed at the front, and usually girls and boys were segregated - girls on one side and boys on the other.

FF and Co-admins ... thanks so much for taking this idea to your bosoms. I really hope that it prospers and we have an excellent start in Pabmusic's classroom photograph and Mr.Tarleton's brilliant shot Could be Treasure of the Sierra Madre, or the like. My proper debut I will make it in a separate post. I think this section will be more navigable and contiguous if there are regular entry points rather than a long tape-worm of pictures.

Anyway, join me if you will on the post entitled 'Tripcock Ness aka Margaret Ness'.
