Here's a Lark, ascended over S Wilts this evening.

I couldn't get it to play.

We've been watching and hearing skylarks on local clifftop fields during the past week. They always lift the spirits. Didn't record any though. Videoing on an iphone is pretty hopeless as they're such tiny dots in a bright sky.

this is the only time I have managed to get anything even half decent, and it is obviously very small. I have changed the link and my privacy setting , hope it works.

We're under the major flight path of both USAF and RAF fighter training trails from USAF in Lincolnshire, RAF out over Morecambe Bay and Solway, and from Leeming Bar etc, and every so often we have twenty minutes of deafening zooming, coming and going etc - and those guys are NOT thousands of feet up at all, but hugging the ridges practising fighter skills!

Judging by the sounds it''s very similar to one which I think is in the fields nearby, but I've not spotted it in the air, yet. I was hoping to record bird song today, but it didn't happen. Ah well ... tomorow .....

Sound like a bit of a lark to me! Seriously relieved though, having thought the skylark to be a disappearing species, owing to farming methods.

I think, well I hope, some enlightened farmers leave their grasslands untouched until after the nesting season. What horrifies me is that a few fields are a sickly yellow...meaning that contact herbicides were sprayed on at some point.

Depending on what's growing it could also be lack of nitrogen (the 'soil' in many farm fields is little more than an inert medium for the crops which are then dependent on applications of 'food') or possibly disease - round here grain crops often get sickly from various fungus infections at the beginning of the season.
