My mother, born 1907, used to tell me how extremely popular with the public Edward had been as a young man. She said he had the 'common touch', the ability to talk to anyone apparently as an equal. In that way she thought he was like Princess Diana. She took it for granted that the Mrs Simpson business meant he couldn't be king. I don't think she admired him, but she thought he had a certain charisma.

In the 1960s I had a middle-aged cleaner who thought the whole story was the ultimate romantic novel - he gave up the throne for love! Pure Mills and Boon. She certainly admired him.
