    All in all, it's a rather good reminder that Beatrix Potter and Kenneth Grahame were slightly off the mark about animal behaviour.

    We're still not quite sure why theropod dinosaurs grew feathers - they definitely didn't fly. Warmth is a likely reason, sexual display another, but there's also protection against predators. They were often quite vulnerable and feathers might have offered a little protection. Their descendants - birds - don't use feathers just for flying.
