Yup - Charles Wuorinen, Elliott Carter, and Milton Babbitt.

BeefO's mentioned him on the American Classics Thread a couple of times, Edgey. Quite a number of recordings (with, I think, four each on NAXOS and BRIDGE - the record company, not the neglected Brit!]). Sadly the only one of the trio still with us and active - I hope he manages to match the longevity of the other two: Babbitt 94, Carter 103!

Can't seem to make the [IMG][/IMG] setup work - I've reproduced the link above this message. Zilch - as can be seen (or rather, not)

I think this is quite easy - but then, anything's easy if you're familiar with it:

The composer is in the centre, with the striped shirt. They're recording his 1st Symphony.

I think this was the gentleman you wanted, though possibly not the exact image you had in mind. I think your link was to the whole page which included your image, whereas you would need to click on the image itself so that the URL ends in something like .jpg

Pabs - I don't recognise the composer in #473, but the orchestra leader looks like Irvine Arditti, which would mean that the orchestra is the LSO?

(The conductor looks vaguely familiar, too.)

The conductor is Nicholas Braithwaite. I'll keep stumm about the composer for the moment.

The first African-American to graduate from the Julliard School. I think that makes him the first to graduate in 'serious' music from any American college:

Here he is carrying a tray:

Here he's standing well behind Richard Widmark:

I'll post his most (very, very) famous composition after he's been identified.
