one of a series of photos which I guess were taken on the same day. There's another with roles reversed - Mstislav at piano, Sergei watching.

I have to admit it's so. What can I say? It was (for me) quite late and the little imp within surfaced.

Poulenc in the middle, and (we think) Lennox Berkley on the left.

I expect Mary knows the photo of Pears, Poulenc & Britten walking arm-in-arm towards the camera. I won't upload it because it will be huge.

2nd photo down on this massive page

the date given for that other Poulenc/Britten picture is 1941, but I have no other information

1941? Seems most unlikely. Britten was in America then, and I don't think he had yet met Poulenc.

Yes, I do know the rather nice Pears/Poulenc/Britten photo. That caption describes Pears as a baritone!

Thank you. I can't quite make out the figure on the left as Lennox Berkeley, but I suppose it could be.

(just to be clear I never claimed it was Mr Berkeley)

And it was only a shot in the dark on my part! I'm guessing that the photo dates from the year that Les mamelles de Tiresias was put on at Aldeburgh (1958) - it was given in an arrangement for two pianos (Britten and Poulenc) and conducted by Charles Mackerras (doesn't look like him); John Cranko was director.

Edit - Poulenc didn't make it to Aldeburgh in 1958 (he was ill) but he was there in 1956. Anyone know who else was there that year?

Paul Sacher conducted the Poulenc Aubade in 1956; could it be him? I haven't been able to find a photo of him from that period.

I've tried to investigate the origins of the photo - I think its with the National Portrait Gallery but they don't illustrate either of their two (apparent) pictures of Poulenc on their website.
