Well done Pabs, another vat of Cali's wine perhaps - if he has any left. Horns always puzzled me; they are brass of course but seemed conventionally to be grouped with the wooden lot. fhg is right - no heavy brass!!

Yup! they are all violas [or celli and bass]. If you listen to it and compare with the sound of the first serenade you'll hear the lack of high strings [in the left channel]. Op16 is wind heavy anyway so the strings are somewhat muted. Headphone will help.

Going back a couple of years to #4, Flay, what on earth is a New Guinea singing dog? I worked in New Guinea for many years and I never encountered such a thing. I met my neighbour's Bit Me On The Leg Dog, but as far as I know it didnt sing (apart from perhaps one last yelp when my neighbour shot it).

Heavy brass,is that just trombones,tubas etc?

Their sound ai! (The louder brass are affectionately called "heavy" by anyone sat in front of them on stage - which is usually everyone except the percussion. They're in the Pub.)

Unfair, since it misses out those dreadful occasions when someone has set up the orchestra with the horns in front of the percussion. Particularly in front of the timps. It can be literally damaging, for sudden blows from the drums can travel up the horns and hit the teeth (no doubt one of our esteemed hornists will confirm this). From the timpanist's point of view, certain horn notes will set up sympathetic resonances that you really could do without.

And there really is nothing pleasant about the sound of a horn heard from behind.

After that, you really need the pub.

So are Saxophones. Have you ever seen a wooden one?
Some horns are made of nickel silver (as are saxophones)

How would you describe a metal flute - or a solid gold one? Can't say that they're woodwind - they don't even have a reed.

So,

Q Do horns belong in the brass section or the woodwind?

A It all depends on which section you are playing with at the time (In Bruckner and Mahler symphonies even the hornplayers are confused by finding themselves mixed in with Wagner Tubas)
