Dvorak's family look a bit glum - perhaps someone forgot the corkscrew? (It's happened to my partner & I - we had to send his 7 year old daughter round the beach to see if anyone else had one), & I think Debussy has borrowed that rather dashing hat and parasol from a lady aquaintance.

(As for captions, I thought the one for Elgar was quite funny enough - was his dog a beagle?)

No. Marco was a springer spaniel. Mina and (?) Meg were cairn terriers.

Please see Ferney's great gag upthread on the same theme!! ("This place SUKS!" )
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

It was the connection of beagles with smoking that I was thinking of

                    - the laughter being that characteristic leer of the vulgar Mr James. (I wonder if the score is of "The Building of the Bless This House"?)

                    With apologies to Mary.

                        I should hope so

It's an unfortunate likeness, much less evident in real life than in photos. I never even thought of it before the days of message boards like this one. I wonder if BB was aware of it? Though I don't expect he and Sid James were aware of each other much, if at all.

I agree, it had never occurred to me, Mary.

Still can't really see it... I mean, look at this of BB with Joan Cross after the première of Peter Grimes...

My goodness, didn't Britten look old for a young man of 31?

It was all that incessant composition; it's enough to age anyone!

                                I don't think much of Peter's drag.
