When DSCH came to London for the western premiere of the 15th on 02.11.1972 there were two concerts - the first a couple of days earlier of Russian music conducted by Svetlanov. Oistrach played at both

Oh I wouldn't have recognised York Bowen - very derivative, his music was.

It was to an extent...he was born in 1883...but nonetheless a somewhat uner-rated composer. His Flute Sonata shows considerable French influence. My youngest daughter did a movement for her Grade 8 some 20 years ago. It was very much like one of those Paris piece de concours with a terrific piano part. (Gulp.)

Bowen always comes across as an odd hodge-podge of influences from "sellable" sources - Rachmaninov, Strauss, Ireland, Ravel, for examples - as if he thought, well, I personally haven't anything original to say, so I'll take purple clichés from here, there and anywhere and just go from the one to the next: that should work!
