when they stick up two sets of goalposts, (and start charging £50 a ticket, pie extra) then it will be sport.
      Just a hobby till then.

Still the music sounds worth catching. Perhaps footy can learn something from them after all.

I caught some of it (and it's a real dilemma because sport IS intrinsically linked with politics!) and it's infinitely more interesting to watch than any skating or the tedious athletics that the summer olympics consist of zzzzzzzzz

Absolutely agree about skating and athletics (but no dilemma for me). It's the curling that's much more interesting.

And of course was the only gold medal GB got in the 2002 games (& formed 50% of the total number of medals).

& you might be impressed by this picture of the last Bonspiel in Scotland (in 1979)

I'm trying to remember what I read about the material used for curling 'stones' (?) - it all comes from one particular remote island, is that correct ?

Possibly more information than you wanted (from Wikipedia) -
weight between 38 and 44 pounds (17 and 20 kg) a maximum circumference of 36 inches (910 mm) and a minimum height of 4.5 inches (110 mm).[14] The only part of the stone in contact with the ice is the running surface, a narrow, flat annulus or ring, 0.25 to 0.50 inches (6.4 to 12.7 mm) wide and about 5 inches (130 mm) in diameter; the sides of the stone bulge convex down to the ring and the inside of the ring is hollowed concave to clear the ice.

The stone comes from Ailsa Craig, a volcanic plug off the coast of Ayrshire. Wikipedia sayathat it can also come from a quarry in Wales.

(If you're interested it's being sold by the 8th Marquess of Ailsa, for £1.5 million - reduced from £2.5 - a bargain!)

If you watch nothing else from the Olympics, watch this:

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Hmm. Not bad, and it probably is all that I will watch from these 'games'.

All the more moving as the "Lipnits" in her surname clearly indicates her Jewish ancestry, and with that music, in that country...
