    Winter Olympics

Good to hear Rite of Spring extensively used at the Opening Ceremony.... and surprising to see Vanessa Mae turning out in the Thai squad as a qualified Alpine skier! http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/winter-olympics/25802907

Enjoyed the Khachaturian "Masquerade" Waltz during the almost obscenely grandiose firework display at the end.

All that plus Gergiev helping carry the flag à la Barenboim in London, and a discovery for me: Sviridov's music for the film "Time Forward!"...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

There are rather naughtier jokes to be made about Putin, but...

The snowboarding was amazing! Our youngsters did themselves proud, but Austria's Anna Gasser was awesome.

I'm sure Peter and the Wolf needs to be there somewhere, 'cos Mrs A and I fell about laughing at that 'overland' skiing thing where they stop and shoot imaginary beasts every so often. Whoever thought up such a bizarre event?

Just thought of a new one for 2016. Freestyle swimming where they harpoon a whale or two every few lengths.

How about this for appropriate music?

Watch the video for Moby Dick from Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin II for free, and see the artwork, lyrics and similar artists.

Back to Winter, and are we going to have curling again, the 2010 event which caused even more mirth chez ardcarp. All that manic sweeping.

Suggest Dashing away with a Smoothing Iron or the lovely Northumbrian folk-song, Buy Broom Beezums.

& I would refer members who think that sport (especially the Olympics) can be viewed in isolation to read JLW's comment in another place

But the whole story is there in the infamous Putin quote isn't it? "Gays welcome to the Olympics, keep away from the kids"....
That's it, really. Legislation based on profound and primitive ignorance. Great to see the handsome frontwoman of the BBC team, but I still hold out hopes of a same-sex podium kiss... it would be at least as powerful as the 1968 Black Power salute. And what is this "politics" point anyway? This is basic human rights, not "political point-making"...

Sorry if I'm repeating earlier comments, bit short of time recently... but they can't be repeated too often.

There are some wonderful pictures of Putin in the great outdoors, bare-chested, riding on the back of a bear too!

It'll be more worth watching than snowboarding, which is reminiscent of youths in the Tesco car park.

You don't have to be young to snowboard

                        Nonsense

I caught some of it (and it's a real dilemma because sport IS intrinsically linked with politics!) and it's infinitely more interesting to watch than any skating or the tedious athletics that the summer olympics consist of zzzzzzzzz

I fail to see why you think a picture of a bare chested, virile, black belt judoka, Russian leader riding on a bear is homoerotic?

wikipedia says this music used to introduce the main television news bulletin in Soviet times - on a first listen I wouldn't rate it as highly as Mosolov's Iron Foundry (for example)
