We watched a bit of the England match through a pub window in Covent Garden on the way to the new Don G at ROH. As we went on our way, it looked as if England were about to win. As we settled down in Row N of the Amphitheatre before curtain up the chap next to us with a smart phone suddenly gave a groan - France had scored under the posts with 2 minutes to go. I responded with a rather feeble comment about the performance we were about to see not ending with any surprises - not quite true, as it happened.

What? And they say the Scots are mean! At least we'd go in and buy a drink.

OTOH to watch Scotland without alcoholic comfort probably comes under the heading of Cruel and Unusual Punishment.

I hope you enjoyed Don G.

Does that mean they can't tell each other apart?

I don't think that's quite what I had in mind............... More that les Anglais - especially estuary dwellers - are quite incomprehensible.

Did he go back on Sunday to cheer on Scotland's capitulation?
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Quite. That was an embarrassment - in fact, two. Scotland's performance, and the pitch.

I thought the Welsh performance was equally dire, though Ireland were very good. Wales' half-back pairing, Phillips and Priestland, were totally outplayed by Murray and Sexton, and the pack was so poor. Gatland seems to have forgotten that when Warburton is captain Wales tend to lose (they had that long losing spell before the first Grand Slam under him) and they are really missing the superb Ryan Jones who brings out the best in the pack and never has a bad game. Losing Scott Williams early didn't help, but what little possession they had was so slow and usually wasted thanks to Phillips and Priestland that it wouldn't have made much difference. Gethin Jenkins didn't look fully fit either.

I hope Gatland will make several changes for the next game, dropping Warburton and Lydiate and the two half-backs. As he said, it was one of Wales' worst performances of recent years.
