    A Start to the Year

    1. Beethoven, String Quartet op.127 in E flat.

    The opening chords demanding attention in a never to be forgotten & quite unique manner.

    2. Olivier reading from Hamlet;

    " So oft it chances in particular men
    That for some vicious mole of nature in them,
    As in their birth, wherin they are not guilty
    ( since nature cannot choose his origin )
    By their o'ergrowth of some complexion,
    Oft breaking down the pales & forts of reason,
    Or by some habit, that too much o'erleavens
    The form of plausive manners - that these men,
    Carrying, I say, the stamp of one defect,
    His virtues else, be they as pure as grace,
    Shall in the general censure take corruption
    From that particular fault.

    Jean - Philippe Rameau.

    Les Fetes D'Hebe.

    The great musette from the last act of this opera is beyond compare.
    The very essence of pastoral love, beyond anything else I have heard.

    W. B Yeats

    A Prayer for my daughter. ( example ).

    " I have walked and prayed for this young child an hour
    And heard the sea-wind scream upon the tower,
    And under the arches of the bridge, and scream
    In the elms above the flooded stream;
    Imagining in excited reverie
    That the future years had come,
    Dancing to a frenzied drum,
    Out of the murderous innocence of the sea.

    Music for a viol consort

    Preferably 17th. cent. English

    T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets

    Paul Scofield - Have had both Robert Speight & Alec Guinness ( all very good )

    Dylan Thomas ( himself)

    Poem in October
