    John Fortune 1939 2013

item in the Graun reporting the passing of John Fortune; a quiet man with a passion for Scarlatti if i recall aright

the Mirror pays a good tribute
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

He and John Bird used to make me weep with laughter with their satirical sketches on the Bremner show.

At times like this we cannot afford to lose satirists of this calibre.

Not forgetting "Not so much a programme", and "A Melon for Ecstasy" (I've never looked at laburnums in quite the same way again )

A very well-chosen collection of clips on the Channel 4 News a few minutes ago. A brilliant man!

Sad loss - the satire of his generation was somehow more subtle than a lot of the stuff now.

Gosh I thought I was the only person who had read "A Melon For Ecstasy"!

Me, too (not to mention each other!) - a really sad loss.

I loved the dinner party conversations.

He and John Bird understood the difference between satire and lampoon. What passes for satire today falls very short of what they achieved, it's a sad loss.
