Another fixture of my childhood gone.

Well known for his 'Colemanballs' gaffes he was something better than just a sports reporter as his excellent coverage of the 1972 Munich Olympics tragedy demonstrated. I'll remember that more than anything else about him.

Sportsnight with Coleman....a treat at a young age, which had to be earned.
For some reason particularly seem to recall a late night wait for highlights of a Derby V Juventus(?) European cup semi final in the early 70's.
And I liked his psycho babble free commentaries.

      Reaney..... to Bremner...Giles...to Lorimer....Jones.....Clarke.....One Nil !!

      RIP

            There are the famous ColemanBalls

"That's the fastest time ever run - but it's not as fast as the world record."

"Don't tell those coming in the final result of that fantastic match, but let's just have another look at Italy's winning goal."

"He's 31 this year - last year he was 30."

""The late start is due to the time."

"It's gold or nothing...and it's nothing. He comes away with the silver medal."

"Forest have now lost six matches without winning."

"He's even smaller in real life than he is on the track."

"The front wheel crosses the finish line, closely followed by the back wheel."

"And here's Moses Kiptanui - the 19-year-old Kenyan who turned 20 a few weeks ago."

"That's the fastest time ever run, but it's not as fast as the world record."

"If that had gone in, it would have been a goal."

He didn't quite make it as a professional footballer, but spent a short time with Stockport County.

He was 'quite remarkable'! I always felt I trusted him.

He is the one sports commentator I remember from my childhood. He could do no wrong in my eyes until he commented on the London Marathon:

                        "Here come the fun runners."

The absurd and utterly insulting term stuck.

Yes EA,he had a trial with County back in the day.
He was a reporter for the Stockport Express early in his career too.

                          Sad news,RIP.

I seem to remember he returned to officially open something or other at Edgeley Park in the later 1960s
