The only occasion on which I attempted a pun in German:
I was surveying the soup options in The Augustinerbrau, and I asked my friends what Rumfordsuppe was. The origin from Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford was explained to me, and then noticing that the next item was Franz Zwiebel Suppe I "innocently" asked who Franz Zwiebel was.
I did say it was the only time, and it proved that the German sense of humour is no laughing matter.
