A Punch cartoon from the 1970s showed a (pre-routemaster) double-decker bus, with the destination display showing 'Elephant and Castle'; while the conductor, hanging off the back platform, is shouting at a bus queue 'Elephant only!'.

It was advertised as free - so how could it be sold out? Oversubscribed, maybe...

Appropriate thread for more than one reason…

Who knew Daniel Harding pursues a parallel career to his conducting, as an Air France airline pilot?!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I learnt today that male bumble bees can't sting and can be stroked, not so the female. I haven't yet mastered the way of telling them apart.

One way I discovered was when dead-heading a rose, not realising that it hid a female bumble bee. I experienced all the pain despite immediately squeezing out the venom, thinking this would release the barbs on the sting, not appreciating that unlike their honey bee "cousins" bumble bees do not have barbs on their stings, and are therefore able to sting repeatedly - apparently.

I had one dealing with my father's will: he was very slow, but very old - I would imagine young Essex solicitors to be up-to-the minute in hi-tech gadgetry.

....or they have a friend who makes lingerie with a converted warehouse which can quickly produce a few high tech gee gaws....and best of all they know where Essex is....

....sorry for Essexisms....but after all there are over 100 lawyers in parliament [many from Essex], though I haven't counted....

                            And they aren't telling

                            Dear House of Commons,
How many members of parliament are either barristers, solicitors or hold law degrees
                            Yours faithfully,
                            E.B.Mullock PhD
The request was refused by House of Commons
                            .

I should in fairness add that the refusal was partial, in that some indication was given of how information pertaining to some MPs might be found, but given the hundreds of MPs finding even that incomplete information would be time consuming.

Aaaah !!!....the Party of the Second Part....The First Part being both unintelligible and disingenuous - both obfuscatory and contumely - and we [they] are not going to stir the dirty dirty waters because it's the individuals private muck....

Am I absolutely the only living human being in the entire UK and beyond who thought today was a Bank Holiday (first Monday in August)? If so, I shall accept the accolade but I rearranged my plans on the basis of this misconception
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
