I must remember to pedal down there sometime and check what it all looks like today.

Remembering as one does trolley buses from among the plethora of childhood reminiscences, I always loved it whenever the driver was forced to take avoiding action which disconnected the bus from the overhead tangle of wires, thereby causing a jam. This happened usually at junctions, resulting in delays in every direction until for the rescue vehicle turned up. On its arrival, a man (always a man, from memory) would emerge and, standing on the cabin roof, raise a long pole with a hook at its far end to re-connect with the overhead power supply. To us kids' delight, contact would result in an immense shower of sparks cascading to the ground.

Signs outside the entrances to the prestigious school just down the road from me read:

          DULWICH COLLEGE

          Social Distancing enacted here

          Thank you

And I thought: how true; couldn't have put it better myself.

            Skilled mink

It just occurred to me, on my return journey from W. Norwood with weekend groceries a-bagged, that an exact spoonerism of skimmed milk is skilled mink.

Struck by the coincidence with recent unfortunate news emanating from Denmark, I was led to wonder to what purposes mink skills could be put? Perhaps among other things to being first in queue for rescue when the animal liberation people invade the premises where you await being turned into an expensive coat?

Which brings back memories of my father buying for my mother what to all outward appearances was a mink fur coat, but which in fact wasn't; it had been dyed to look as it it was. Very clever, as was my father's answer whenever admirers asked - and it should be remarked that expensive furs were still markers of social distinction in the early 1960s: "It's mink dyed marmot". Which could be taken to mean one of two things: mink, dyed marmot - an exculpator from charges of snobbery, since the mink was being disguised; or mink-dyed marmot, which is what it actually was. Subtle difference!

Up here Mr Johnson's claim that the United Kingdom's response to covid exemplified the sheer might of the Union is being seen as spoonerish.

"While there will be 40 patients having the jab every hour, doctors are urging people to be patient".

I didn't realise one had to be injected every hour - or does that apply to just those 40 patients?

                          EPIMEDIOLOGY

From a lovely malapropism from a caller during a phone-in yesterday. Here is my definition:

"Study of the distribution and determinants of particular brands of ground cover of garden centre-related origin, especially to be found in specific suburban outdoor contexts".

I reckon the police out there should deploy stingers of the type used to puncture tyres, to deflate the overinflated, deluded patriotic self-righteousness of the thugs.

Can’t find the thread where the shared news broadcasts reverted to on R3 recently were discussed... but just heard my first one after Amy Beach - they’re dreadful. Turned off half-way through some lengthy clap-trap about Sarah Ferguson which apparently necessitated a special reporter. Seriously: why does R3 need news bulletins at all?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
