Check that passport is still valid...

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

ah Scalextric ... used to play for hours with No 1 son; but now he makes tv films about cars &c and is visiting over the holidays so i have been tidying the spare bedroom and rearranging a huge pile of junk in the middle room [don't know what else to call an ex bedroom full of files cds computers and furniture and stuff] ... another day of heavy lifting and the attic will hide the stuff i failed to chuck [a weakness i think]; so the house will be presentable for the visitations due shortly

dealing with stuff calls in to the reckoning the pathways of one's life and the meanings [such as may be] of existence .... it does slow the progress as nostalgia dives into the nooks and crannies hidden in old diaries, letters &c .... all shredded i am pleased to say ...

one day that elm stool will be stuff

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

I did a furniture-making course [C&G 555] and we were told that the reason so little humble domestic furniture survived (as opposed to Hepplewhite and Chippendale] was because humble folk used to chop it up for much needed firewood ...

Now, I have just bought my Christmas cards and 2nd class stamps. Today is the last day for 2nd class guaranteed arrival by Christmas day ... so ... >>>>>>>>>>>

Then I'm very lucky to have inherited a number of rural Chippendale chairs then, too inelegant though they would have been to have adorned a stately home. People say, "What do you keep such uncomfortable junk for?" "Because it was made to last", I tell 'em. Like your stool, ff.

"Her: Oh we had a lovely time in Portugal but he wouldn't let me bring a lace tablecloth back

Him: We don't need a lace tablecloth

Her: Yes we do, for when people come round.

Him: But people don't come round, do they?

Her: They would if we had a lace tablecloth!"

We-e-ell, I can't guarantee that if we have a cold winter. Kindling round here now costs £2.95 a bag...

it won't matter when the stool trips you up and breakfast goes flying

Good point - even if I did pay too much for it. In fact, I probably ought not to have paid more than £2.95 for it. But that would be to ignore the pleasure in cleaning it - say, 10 hours @ £10 ph ... not sure what that proves. Anyway, the Christmas cards have been posted, so that's that job done.
