"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Thought Whiteladies referred to a convent of some sort. Dunno about Blackboy Hill. I live off Pigsty Hill
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I think any reference to a Blackboy may refer to Charles II who was swarthy and referred to as such as a code. Although I have just noticed ff's location, and it may have quite a different connotation near an Atlantic port. (e.g. Nantes' fortunes came from the "Ebony" trade).

Used to be a pub called The Blackboy near Bosham was renamed something for several years until a public outcry resulted in the name reverting to the original. Some locals aver that the name is a corruption of "Black Buoy" in reference to the marine situation of the inn.

Another local pub, The Labour in Vain in Eastergate, nr Chichester, for many years used to sport signage of a woman furiously washing a young black boy in a tub, while hubby was away at sea....

Dig out last year's Christmas cards to put on the strings (which are still there) to convince anyone looking in that we have more friends than most.

                                Old joke.

I was getting the Christmas decorations down fom the loft today and discovered a present that we were supposed to have given the kids last year.

They would have loved that dog.
