A rare ripple moment on the concourse of Charing Cross train station thronged with delayed passengers due to delays caused by a bit of rain as the news came through of the passing of Nelson Mandela. For once people seemed to find something worth communicating to their travelling companions. Young and old alike appeared as if goldfish in a bowl mouthing silent but pregnant words that conveyed the sad news, 'OMG, Nelson Mandela has died'. He leaves the world so much better than he knew it, some fifty years previously, but still there remains so much inequality. The struggle continues and I suspect he was so reluctant to leave us wanting still be on this earth, an enduring beacon of hope.

It's peculiar but while his departure was oft anticipated it has come as a moment of considerable sadness. Bit cross with the current BBC news headline, though: 'South Africa's Nelson Mandela dies'. What? As opposed to Leamington Spa's NM? Or, might we have confused him with NM of 35c Acacia Drive, East Finchley?? There was only one Nelson Mandela and if it comes to that he was truly a citizen of the world.
