Was it facing up, or down, the trunk?

In the Nuthatch Dimension there is no up or down, no left or right
all space and light, trees and flight

      Forage and survival
      Temperature and energy

      A constantly shifting synergy

Nuthatches often travel down trunks and branches, whereas treecreepers run up them.

This morning on the grass, I had a large, majestic mistle thrush half lifting, half dragging something dark-coloured which looked very like a small frog. I couldn’t get the binoculars as I’d have frightened it away. Any ideas what it might be?

What happens when they are up or down or how do they get down or up to begin with?

                      They possibly fly?

Quite. Hence the question. Indeed, Nuthatches seem to be happier headng down.

I was on Mt Lemmon outside Tucson, Arizona on August 13, 2019 and got to see this cute little Nuthatch picking the bark off this tree.

I rest my case. When foraging the bird in that clip clearly favoured headings down, changing orientation when, having identified a target, an obstruction prevented it from getting at its prey from above.

Disagreed - see sequence from 1'11 etc......

And even more clearly untrue of the Arizona one ....up and down and everywhichway..... (and I think the scientists need to come to my garden quick...very liberated Nutties here...maybe they learned from Squirrels....but a main reason for their upwards trajectory here is simply that its the fastest route, after jumping twig to twig, to the suet dispensers....)....

Tree Creepers being shyer and warier, and having smaller finer bills, they have adapted to dispensers far less...

Interesting points about both and woodpeckers - tails and feet and movement - here....
Birds are typically known for their flying abilities, but there are a few that draw attention by their ability to climb up or down trees. We get 3 species at …
