This is a really good idea for the Christmas period. Forumites?

Answers will go online at the same address on 10th December. Thank you to everyone who has helped out, and apologies to those who have had technical problems. One theory is that Internet Explorer will not start playing the music clips until they have been fully downloaded, which at busy times of day or on slower connections may take a while.

As far as I can see the point of Pointless (apart from being barking mad ...) is to identify the "thing" which fewest other people identify. Thus "Name Beatles songs", many people would get "When I'm 64", but there are doubtless some (many) which I haven't a clue about - and the teams have to "sink to the bottom" in order to get a high score. Ideally they can find a "thing" which no-one else managed to identify, which I believe trumps everything else. This is done relative to a moderately large panel of people (100?) who have also been asked (previously) to do the same process.

No! My IE was not downloading anything more, as shown by my Networx window.

The window said 'Your browser does not support embedded audio'. (Which seems strange, since I've never seen this message before, and can play things like samples from a CD track on Amazon with no problem, which one assumes are embedded?)

I did reasonably well on the performing venues, I think, but only managed a handful of Haydn symphony nicknames in the available time. As for the concertos!

A terrific idea for a quiz, though. Full marks to King_Ouf_I.

I really enjoyed this! I had no technical problems but some of the questions were very hard. For me, the oddest thing was getting very choked up during the Rosenkavelier extract...

I had meant to mention that IE yielded no sound but Firefox worked perfectly.

I did the picture quiz - some I do not know, I think that was difficult but I'm confident of the 9 ones I named. The audios didn't work on my browser, the timed questions were ok except for No. 5 - I had no idea, I made a few educated guesses but then on googling I realised I made a few uneducated guesses! (If I catch Pointless Quiz on tv I love it, brilliant concept, trying to find the obscure answer, hope the Quiz Night is huge success!)

All the clips worked perfectly for me, it's just my brain that didn't engage - every one of the Overtures was really familiar, and I couldn't put a name to any.

That might be because I heard them all many years ago, as concert pieces without context.

I think I've given up now.

                              Rosenkavalier? Oh ...
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

                                Update: Friday 29th 21:32

Thank you so much for helping out - I've reached my target for responses on all but ONE of the questions: the chamber music question. If just a few people fancy a go at that question alone, I'd be most grateful (but not if you've already had a go, of course!) Reminder: answers will appear on 10th December.
