Because I always write CD as you seem to (two capitals) there's no room for confusion in writing CDs.

Not so with LP's though. I should not of sold all my vinyl, their worth a fortune now, more than in the 70's

No - LPs seems fine to me. Where would confusion arise? (No need for one in 70s either.)

You're quite right about regretting disposing of vinyl collections - the prices!

Not if you're talking about me being in my 70s, but the decade really does need '70s to differentiate it.

              I know.

I had a look on Amazon last week, thinking about getting a few LPs to play on my turntable. After I saw about three LPs that I'd flogged for about thirty-bob a throw, going for £45 a pop, I had to log-off!!!

I don't often have a problem with that; I don't use it often myself because context usually prevents misunderstanding anyway. There's certainly no reason to decry '70s, but I was referring to another post which had "...more than in the 70's". That's the apostrophe I meant. (Come to think of it, "in the '70's would be interesting.)

I remember a politician [name?] who had trouble spelling 'potato' finally adding the e to the solitary spud.

                        yes, Vice-President Dan Quayle
VP Dan Quayle attempts to correct a student spelling the word "potato"

at the time, I think I got rather confused and started omitting the e from the plural though I didn't insert a greengrocer's apostrophe to replace it

                        why isn't it pianoes ?

It is rather arbitrary. -oes tends to belong to older words, -os to newer, but even that's not entirely so.

Surely 'piano' is part of an Italian word so the plural should be 'piani' ?

I compiled ads for all the music mags before computers.

My boss liked linked ads so I had to do some on two piano music--title 'Two's Company'.

By the time I'd sent the corrected proof back it was too late and a new Four Letter Word was born in our office:- TWOS COMPANY.

Red face for me, well one learned to check magazine on the phone as well as send proof by messenger.

                              Lovely story.

'Piano' - although from the Italian - is now a well established English word. In Italian it's an adjective ('quiet') so I doubt there's an acceptable plural. Best to use an English plural as it's a noun in English.

... tho' I remain uncertain whether one wd add a further apostrophe to mark the possessive case of a word which already ends in an apostrophe -

"I gestured towards the maître d' - but the maître d' 's demeanour was not such as to inspire much confidence."
