There's something about watching people at work that I love, and no more so than when watching a composer and a band in collaboration. Here's the kind of thing I mean, and also an example of the kind of illumination that the recent soundtracks season failed to provide.
It's a long video (20 mins but is well worth sticking with) and gives a great sense of the dynamic of a large entity and how technical the business of laying down a soundtrack actually is. From that point of view, Jerry Goldsmith was possibly THE latter day master.
I'm also struck by how this session, following on the conductor's lead, is so much of a team effort. He clearly knows many of his players by name, and they him, so they are all attempting to hit a precise benchmark.
Btw: the sound/image sync is always a bit out on these videos so at times it appears that Goldsmith is only on the beat or a tadge behind, rather than leading it.
