Like ff, I wouldn't want a purely classical music station and have already suggested what sort of content and style I would want in the "What do radio listeners want?" thread on the Ideas and Theory board.

Certainly agree with you about Jonathan Swain. Also I'd include Stephen Johnson and restore Discovering Music to its original and better length. Listening to Richard Osborne's recent CD Review of Sibelius 3 reminded me of much that R3 has lost.

Re a replacement to in-tune or such like - wouldn't it be great to rid ourselves of the trivial tweet and allow the music - and its critique - space to breathe? Why not bring back CD Masters or an equivalent? How about a regular feature about specific orchestras and / or conductors examining their key recordings over the decades with comments from the likes of Rob Cowan, Andrew Macgregor et al in conversation with those involved in the playing and recording?

      Best Wishes,

      Tevot

I liked the programme presented by Iain Burnside (where he?) on the voice (was it called Voices?) which was scrapped for no obvious reason in some schedule revision quite a few years ago. It wasn't to everyone's taste but seemed to me something worth doing.

Wholly endorse the above and also brassbandmaestro's observations. Am also taken by TS' posting #15 above...

Why can't there be a R3 version of the arts desk or similar which rejoices in paragraphs rather than tweets?

          Best Wishes,

That's a marvellous idea Tevot! We need those and yes the iain Burnside programme was always interesting to listen to.

Possibly the only programme where I wrote in to say how much I'd appreciated it, and had an email back from the producer thanking me: It was one which linked the war poets/composers with settings of the poems. I think it was called 'The Pity of War'. I didn't much like it when the programme seemed to become more of a mixed bag in terms of songs.

But, to Bbm's point: series (at least) focused on a single instrument would be good (I think Woody Allen did a Jazz File on the clarinet - which he played himself). We don't seem to have series of that kind at all now.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

This is why I think it's very important to have these programmes, to jolt the brain cells!

The best presenters will defect to the sound of my moneybags - you name your ideal line-up, but I might as well tell you now: David Owen Norris, Stephen Plaistow, Catherine Bott (are you reading this, Catherine? ), Martin Handley, John Shea and - yes, I want to liberate him from the flamin' brain teasers - Rob Cowan, are all getting plenty of gigs
Will there be British music Cal ?

If it goes ahead, I'd volunteer to do the 3.00Am to 5.00AM slot with MrGongGong

                          Of COURSE!!!!

Some good further names above ... and I have three further words for the opening press statement (hope I didn't miss them in foregoing posts):

                          On

                          Record

                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

It's helpful to know who will NOT be shortlisted for station controller....

That is one of the reasons why my win would not be spent on Bbm's idea of a TV channel... A big reason!
