MacDonald Gill illustrated maps

I quite like some of the 5-minute slideshows they sometimes have on the BBC website

anyway, this latest is on MacDonald Gill's humourous illustrated maps of London and the world, including the 1913 'Wonderground Map'. Not a name I'm familiar with. I think there's an exhibition currently on in Ealing.

will take you to the House itself and pictures of the frontage and especially, the gate, one of Sir John Soane's fascinating creations. On holiday in Montreal and visiting the Architectural Gallery there, the first thing we saw in a special Soane exhibition was a large picture of this gate which I had walked under for many, many years on my way to and from work!

How very confusing that two such quirky artists of near generations would have almost palindromic names:

It reminds me of Samuel Taylor Coleridge

and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor

Or was that deliberate?

Donald McGill lived most his life around the corner from me in Blackheath, South East London. Specifically, Blackheath Grove, and doors away was the Blackheath Arts Centre which from 1933 was home to the GPO Film Unit, later the Crown Film Unit. It was there that interior scenes were shot on a reconstructed set for the interior scenes of the great 'Night Mail' documentary.

But forgive me ... This is a MacDonald Gill thread!
