Mea Culpa, I've met the current Lord Byron but I doubt that's any help!

I had no idea the title was extant, but I suppose there's no reason why it shouldn't be.

So sorry, you've not the answer yet. A reminder, the question was 'who did the unknown Elliott Carpenter play for at the White House'.

Answer: Well, not literally the White House - we're talking about 'Casablanca' and Dooley Wilson's singing, and playing, indeed of 'As Time Goes By'. The thing is Dooley Wilson was a drummer and couldn't play the piano, so Elliot Carepenter was the real pianist playing of camera while Wilson stroked a dummy keyboard.

          - oh that's brilliant, shb: bravo!

(Once Charles Laughton was mentioned, I wondered if "Elliot Carpenter" might have been a pseudonym for Rachmaninov (who wrote The Bells - Hunchback - Laughton) when he played in private for some President or other! )

Blimey, that's where Joseph Cooper got the idea from on Face The Music

Max Miller used to lean over the footlights and say to the drummer:

"Gimme a touch of the brush son, but not too much - I might get to like it!"

According to Bob Monkhouse, Miller asked BM to look after that gag for him when he'd died and BM agreed.

I wonder who's looking after it now?
