What is 'shaving' ? Or having a 'hair-cut', for that matter ?

What is this post about?

No - Mrs Pab won't allow me to have a beard (good idea now, since I would look like Santa) or a moustache (a pity). When I go for a haircut, it includes a rather physical scalp massage, which is something I'd never experienced in the UK.

As far as 'special' blades go, it rather depends on how fast your beard grows, and whether you need a second shave come 2 pm.

Hmmm, tempting. But I have to say that I've been using the Wilkinson Hydro for about 2 years and they are amazing. Such a close shave and never a cut.

They have 5 blades, which I figured was a gimmick, but it must be doing something to give such a safe, close and comfortable shave. The cartridges are expensive, but they last twice as long as others, so work out cheaper.

I bought a job lot in Sainsburys about 18 months ago when they were half price, so even cheaper

Which Edwin Jagger model did you get?

What's wrong with an electric razor? It is faster and costs virtually nothing to run - no replacement blades, no cuts, no pre-shave and no aftershave!

And while we are on the subject, why is one or two days growth of beard so uncomfortable? You would expect that half a millimetre of stubble sticking out of the skin would not produce any discomfort at all.

Never got on with them. Got given a swanky Panasonic as a present that I gave a 6 month trial to, but, no thanks. They're also not very masculine and probably better for shins.

Tempted to retry a Wilkinson Sword-Edge type double-edged flat blade if that is indeed what is being described here but can you still get a holder which allows you to adjust the cutting angle? Haven't used shaving soap for 40+ years, just watery soap frothed between the palms.

Got photographed, the only time I was bearded, at the Playboy Club attended by Liz of the Flowers Keg dynasty doing the famous "Bunny Dip".

I think shaving is a very personal thing and if you get on with the Fusion type cartridges, fine- although I thought I did until I got my DE safety razor; it was initially a purely financial decision, but I am now totally converted. Needed a bit of trial and error with blades, though- the Japanese Feather variety are known as the sharpest, so naturally I thought they were the ones to go for- result:- endless nicks and cuts. Apparetly they work best in Feather razors, which are rather pricey. The Gillette blades I use now hardly ever cut and give a lovely smooth shave. Like the proverbial baby's bum.

As for electric razors- not for me. I never got a decent shave from one, much worse than the Fusion type. I used to keep a portable electric razor for emergencies, but then whenever I needed it the batteries were nearly always flat anyway.
