I own a large shawl-type scarf, rather like a multi coloured paisley pattern keffiya, which I wind around my neck several times (being susceptible to cold). I have only just realised: does this mean that I am in fact wearing a pashmina, or even worse, a Liberty Square? Am I turning into Miss Fritton? (although I have never acquired Alastair Sim's knack of throwing it on).

I feel impelled to go out and find just such a scarf - it's the perfect time of year for a new look.

          @slipperettes

That reminds me of the faux advertisements that used to punctuate the BBC2 series of Beachcomber of yore.

            ... various issues remain un-addressed :

            1. handkerchiefs/handkerchieves in top jacket pocket - ever possible? "Fake" ones, ie ones that you're never going to use for their primary purpose - clearly a complete no-no. As also handkerchiefs/handkerchieves which "match" the tie...

            2. handkerchiefs/handkerchieves worn inside the cuff of the left-hand sleeve of the jacket. Does this habit still exist?

            3. garments with visible labels. I am sure noöne here will wish to offer free advertising for Mr Hollister or Messrs Abercrombie and Fitch.

            4. tee shirts. Caliban "claims" to wear one, but I'm sure it is safely concealed beneath his four-piece suit...

            5. spats or gaiters? My feeling is : spats in town, gaiters in the country, but wd be happy to hear other views.

Any thoughts on the yellow crossed-gartered look, vints?

Oh that's a lovely smile too

I could never figure out folks' acceptance of shop logos printed on any garments - it's bad enough on carrier bags, and has often been said that they should pay us for displaying their outlets! - and I prefer to think of myself as one of the last, rather than Next!

I always thought gaiters were just worn by bishops - Bishopsgaters!

As for unaddressed dress codes, the one big no no for me is, and always has been, bow ties!

Not unless it is worn so tight or so high up that renders the chump silent, I agree

For some reason this prompted me to look up images of Alan Whicker (yes, non-matching) - but I always felt he did dress like a bit of a bounder, distinguished gent as he was in every way.....

Another issue which appears to be a bit of a minefield - buttons on jackets - numbers of buttons on cuffs (and whether they do up), buttons on front of jacket (2,3,4....) At school we had to have 3, of which only the middle one could be done up, but I notice weathermen on TV do up all 3.......

Bow ties are fine if you're a hospital consultant, as ordinary ties get in the way when bending over patients in bed (to examine them).

I'm thinking of re-instating a cravat. I used to wear one in 1972 with a fake Ben Sherman shirt. My friends said I looked like a twit (well the actual word begin with w, but what with this being a public forum).

I was always told by my father that buttons were put on sleeves to stop people wiping there nose on their cuffs....
